It was not till Boston Girls High and Normal School opened in 1857 that young girls had the chance to attend a public secondary faculty. In the late eighteenth and nineteenth century, it was not unusual for city faculties to incorporate a standard curriculum on the secondary level. Teachers are licensed in one of two areas for highschool (and in some states, certification could be to teach grades 6-12).
